An American singer, the raw electric voice of the 1960s counterculture, born in Texas in 1943. She broke out with Big Brother and the Holding Company, then went solo, blending blues, soul and psychedelic rock. After a searing set at Woodstock she was recording Pearl when she died in 1970 at twenty-seven, before the album was finished.
